ProTen Services has helped design and install a waterproofing system at the BRE Flood Resilient Test Home.
This project was delivered to demonstrate how build methods can be used to give a property better resilience against flood water and reduce damage, repair and re-occupation times after a flood.
The system comprised of a cavity drainage waterproofing system of high density polyethylene sheets of studded waterproof membrane, drainage channels and a mechanical sump and pump system.
The system products were manufactured by Delta Membrane Systems and as approved contractors with Delta, ProTen Services worked as the waterproofing design specialists and installers of the system.
ProTen applied the studded moisture resistant membrane to the walls and flooring to form a waterproof inner lining. The sump and pump system was set in the floor slap with the appropriate drainage channels to allow water to collect and be removed away from the property. The walls were plastered with a waterproof, salt and chemical resistance product (Natcem 35). This gives future flood resilience to the property as it would significantly reduce the need for the plaster to be removed following a flood.
One of the major causes of water damage and contamination to a property is the amount of time water is left within the property after a flood. The waterproofing system was adapted so that flood water inside the property would have the means to quickly drain away.
This was carried out by installing an exposed grated inlet within the finished ceramic floor of the room which was connected to drainage channels set underneath the flooring within the concrete flooring slab and around the perimeter of the room. These drainage channels led to the main sump and pump set within the floor and separate from the mains drainage so that water could be pumped out.
This BRE project brought attention to how properties can be better protected from flooding.
