Work Begins To Improve Teeside International Airport

Construction News Image
Work has started to build Teesside International Airport's new Sky Bar, viewing platform and office space.

Both the landside Sky Bar and at-height viewing platform will be located in what is currently the ageing office space next to the security area. The new development will give passengers and public alike the chance to see, in comfort and style, the growing number of flights that will depart and arrive at Teesside.

The 1,360sq m of office space being created will consist of a new steel frame extension and replace the old disused and dilapidated buffet restaurant area and offices transforming it in a two-floor bar, offering a modern and flexible space for business.

From today, the current viewing platform, drop-off point and short-stay car park are closing to the public so that work can begin. The drop-off/short-stay will temporarily move to the main car park but the usual parking charges for these services will continue to apply.

Visitors to Fairs-Lloyds Travel and the Landside Café can still do so, and those customers will still receive two hours of free parking by obtaining a pass from the terminal.

The scheme of works will start in January with the removal of cladding from the terminal building and demolition of external walls by a former courtyard. From February, the setting of foundations and the erection of the new steel frame extension and roof will begin. The viewing platform is due to be completed and open by May.

Work will be carried out by local firms Wharton Construction, 186 Property Solutions and ADL Developments, which have all previously been part of the terminal's multimillion-pound redevelopment.
