North East Lincolnshire Council and its delivery partner, Equans, has secured funding to deliver the Greater Lincolnshire Groundwater Project.

The project has been awarded £7.18 million of funding and will be delivered in collaboration with the partner organisations. The awarded funding from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is part of the £200m Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme, managed by the Environment Agency, to create and test new approaches to flood resilience tailored to local communities.

The purpose of the project is to help create a better understanding of groundwater and how to manage the flood risk and resources across three proposed trial sites across Greater Lincolnshire – Grimsby, Barton-upon-Humber, Barrow-upon-Humber and Scopwick.

Cllr Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "We are delighted to be part of the Greater Lincolnshire Groundwater Project which will help us to understand and manage groundwater flood risk, especially in an area like Grimsby where many homes are at a significant risk of flooding. We look forward to working with the many partners on this project to tackle groundwater flooding together."
