WJ Group Helps Improve Skid Resistance on Welsh Roads

Construction News Image
WJ Group have completed work to improve the skid resistance on multiple roads on behalf of Cyngor Gwynedd Highways.

WJ Group were awarded the contract to improve the resistance of several roads that had been identified as being below safety standards by the Cygnor Gwynedd Highway Inspection team.

The reduction in skid resistance was a result of aggregate embedment caused by the large volume of traffic using the roads and the high temperatures of summer 2022.

MJ Group was chosen to carry out the work because of its low carbon method of hydro retexturing. This involves using high pressure water jets to blast excess bitumen out of the road surface to restore macro texture to the pavement surface.

The work was completed on three roads, covering 21,825sqm over a period of eight days.

Commenting on the completed works Euron Gwyn Jones, Senior Engineer at Gyngor Gwynedd Dwyfor Highways said: "Retexturing has significantly helped to reduce skid risks across all three sites. It is a process that can be used time and time again if the aggregate is sound, it prolongs the need for more invasive surface treatment. It also helps with reducing the carbon emitted, new material being used and disruption to the road user."

Reflecting on the finished works Gerald Byrne, National Specifications Manager at WJ Group said: "While safety still remains at the top of the priority list, sustainability is increasingly important for customers. Therefore, environmental impact must remain front of mind when working on road improvement projects. Through collaboration with Cyngor Gwynedd Highways, we're extremely proud to have generated such significant carbon savings, while crucially improving road safety across the network."
