Costain has scooped an extension to its existing Service Partner Framework contract with Network Rail.
The twelve-month extension runs until the end of January 2025, and is expected to be worth more than £5 million.
As part of the contract, Costain provides Network Rail with specialist project-management, planning and risk-control services across a variety of programmes. The work includes supporting Network Rail's Weather Risk Task Force, which was set up to combat the risk of climate change to the railway, such as mitigating the dangers of landslips and flooding.
Costain also provides support to the Northern Powerhouse Rail programme, including work on its delivery strategy and the phasing of its construction, and has helped to secure Memorandums of Understanding with Swiss and Dutch rail companies (SBB and ProRail) as part of the International Research and Development Partnership Programme. This programme will strengthen ties between international railway organisations, seeking to share best practice such as how to harness the power of AI.
The company also continues to assist Network Rail with its Electrical Safety Delivery Programme, which aims to improve safety when working on overhead and third-rail power systems.
David Taylor, Costain's interim managing director of the Transportation Division, said: "We're delighted to continue working with such a forward-thinking and innovative customer as Network Rail. The work includes areas of particular importance to Costain, such as responding to climate change and enhancing safety. The extension reflects the good working relationship we have with Network Rail and the achievements we have already secured together, and we look forward to another year of success and collaboration."
