Restoration Begins On Wellington's Historic Former YMCA Building

Construction News Image
Work has officially begun on the redevelopment of Wellington’s historic former YMCA building at 1 Walker Street.

The project will transform the landmark into nine upper-floor apartments and refurbished ground-floor retail space. The renovation is part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s broader commitment to revitalizing the town.

The redevelopment is being led by contractor Pave Aways and is expected to be completed by summer 2025. The apartments are being developed by Nuplace, Telford & Wrekin Council’s housing company.

Telford & Wrekin Council secured over £12 million in government funding from the Towns Fund and Capital Regeneration Programme, along with additional match funding, to support this project and others in Wellington's conservation area. These initiatives aim to boost the town’s retail, leisure, and hospitality sectors. Projects include restoring Wellington’s historic market, upgrading the Wellington Orbit, and improving public spaces.

The enhancements are designed to provide a vibrant setting for the growing number of independent businesses in the area, with plans to upgrade street furniture in the pedestrianized zone once the project is complete.

This redevelopment is part of a larger £135 million "Investing in Telford and Wrekin" program, which includes other major projects such as the Station Quarter in Telford Town Centre and the Theatre Quarter in Oakengates. The investment aims to preserve Telford and Wrekin’s historic buildings while fostering economic growth for future generations.
