TfL Seeks Partner To Develop Solar Power For London Underground

Transport for London (TfL) has opened a competitive tender for a delivery partner to invest in and establish solar farms capable of supplying up to 64 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity to power the London Underground.

This clean energy supply would cover approximately five percent of the Tube’s total electricity demand.

The initiative is part of TfL's wider goal to source 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Solar farms developed under this partnership will provide TfL with zero-carbon electricity through private wire agreements, bypassing centralised National Grid sources to alleviate pressure on national electricity networks while also potentially reducing long-term energy costs.


The project envisions creating new solar infrastructure adjacent to the TfL network, with the potential for broader integration across TfL’s estate. The successful bidder, to be selected after the tender opening on October 31, will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing the solar power facilities.

The development of these solar assets will not only drive TfL's sustainability goals but will also support green job creation and bolster confidence in the UK’s renewable energy market.
