Manchester City Council has approved an additional £5.1 million to advance four new housing projects under the city's 'This City' initiative, aiming to deliver 600 new homes, with at least 20% designated as affordable housing.
The projects will transform brownfield sites in north and east Manchester, as well as a city centre location, into new residential communities.
The funding will cover early-stage design and survey costs necessary for planning applications in 2025. Public engagement for two sites will begin this week:
• Hyde Road, East Manchester – Targeting 150 homes, this project covers land off Hyde Road and Kirkmanshulme Lane.
Monsall, North Manchester – Aiming for 175 homes in the first phase, the development covers land near Monsall Road and Upper Monsall Street.
Two additional projects moving to the planning stage are:
• Postal Street, Northern Quarter – Expected to bring 130 homes, this project follows the recent demolition of a former commercial building on the site. Public engagement is scheduled for early 2025, with construction anticipated to start by late 2025.
• Grey Mare Lane, East Manchester – With plans for 150 homes, this development is part of a broader regeneration project in partnership with Great Places Housing Group and One Manchester. Public consultations for design feedback will begin in the first half of 2025.
The 'This City' initiative began in 2023, with its inaugural development reaching the topping-out stage in June, marking a milestone in the council's housing goals to meet Manchester’s growing demand for affordable and sustainable housing.
