Bill Robertson, Executive Chairman of Robertson Group Ltd, has been awarded a CBE for his services to the construction industry in Scotland.
It’s an appropriate accolade for Robertson who founded the development, construction and services group over 40 years ago at the age of 21.
From a jobbing joinery business with one employee, which focussed mainly on the local market within Robertson’s home town of Elgin, the group has now evolved into a construction conglomerate that delivers £100million projects as a matter of routine.
The group is now made-up of five regionally-based construction companies that cover Northern, Eastern and Central Scotland, Tayside and North-East England; a homes business; a commercial property development company; a financed-based capital projects company that is dedicated to PFI; a facilities management company and a timber frame company.
Robertson Group results for 2006 are due to be published shortly and will show a turnover figure close to £200m, underlining the continued growth pattern of recent years. Similarly, profits will also illustrate this sustained growth model.
Robertson was a former president of the Scottish Building Employers Federation for four years and held the same position with his local association for a similar period.
He was also a member of the Apprenticeship and Training Council for Scotland and sat on the board of the National Federation of Building Trades Employers.
The 62-year-old executive chairman said he was honoured to receive the CBE and credited the success of the group to the hard work of his staff.
He added: “I’m obviously delighted but also surprised to be recognised in this way.
“However over my 40 years, representing the industry locally and nationally, a lot has been achieved.
“I want to say that it has been a great privilege to have had the support of so many people – particularly my family, the workforce and staff past and present in building up what is now a major business employing 900 people.”
