Reappointments For North West Regional Development Agency

Stephen Timms, Minister of State for Competitiveness, today announced the re-appointments of four existing members of the Board of North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA).

John Merry and Peter Hensman will take up their three-year re-appointments on 14 December 2007 until 13 December 2010.

Brenda Smith and Sir Martin Harris have had their appointments extended for one year, until 13 December 2008.

Stephen Timms said: “The regional development agencies have a crucial role to play as drivers of economic development in their region, working to reduce imbalances within and between regions. North West Regional Development Agency will be able to continue to use the knowledge and expertise of those people who have been re-appointed.

“They will help the region deliver its Regional Economic Strategy and reach iits full economic potential, boosting productivity and creating jobs and prosperity.”

Bryan Gray, NWDA Chairman, said: “The NWDA Board plays a vital role driving forward the sustainable economic development and regeneration of England’s North West. I therefore welcome the re-appointments of Peter Hensman, John Merry, Brenda Smith and Sir Martin Harris, each of whom brings with them a wealth of experience and a commitment to the region that will help to maintain the high quality of our board and ensure the continued prosperity of the North West.”

The NWDA leads the economic development and regeneration of England’s North West and is responsible for:
  • Supporting business growth and encouraging investment;
  • Matching skills provision to employer needs;
  • Creating the conditions for economic growth;
  • Connecting the region through effective transport and communication infrastructure.
The North West Regional Development Agency also works to promote the region’s quality of life.
