School Building Projects Over Budget

Five school building projects in Bristol have gone £7.9 million over budget, it has emerged.

A councillor responsible for the city’s schools revealed the largest overspend is at Redland Green School. The costs originally estimated at £30.5m, have risen to £36.4m.

Other school overspends include Fairfield, which is £997,837 over budget, Barton Hill Primary which was £600,000 over and Charnwood House which was £480,750 over budget.

Councillor Derek Pickup has called for an inquiry by the authority’s Audit Committee into the overspend.

“Redland Green is very concerning and we’ve been concerned about it for some time,” Mr Pickup told the BBC.

“What happens now depends on who’s at fault.”

Redland Greed is already open off-site, with years seven and eight, and the first year 12 intake, will be based at Redland from September.

Over 690 children applied for 176 places at the school last year and the council said that of the pupils who did not secure places, about 100 of these live in the catchment area.
