The government has backed plans to build a new Brighton and Hove Albion FC multi-million pound stadium at Falmer.
Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Hazel Blears has written to Falmer Parish Council to say she supports the stadium.
Brighton and Hove Albion, the Coca-Cola League One side currently play at the Withdean Stadium, and have been without a permanent home since 1997.
The stadium is expected to be a 22,374-seater. Chief Executive Martin Perry, spoke on the clubs official website, www.seagulls.co.uk. He said: "This is fantastic news for the club. It's something many of us have worked tirelessly towards for the last eight years - but it isn't green for go just yet."
He urged supporters to be cautious, saying: "We've already had one false dawn: as our supporters already know all too well we have been here before.
"At the moment what we do not know is if our opponents are planning a further legal challenge, which could cause more delays. We will have to wait until early September to see whether the decision is challenged by our opponents. Let's hope that doesn't happen, as it will mean further delays.”
Local residents, the parish council, Lewes council and conservation groups, however, opposed the decision, due to its proximity to the South Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
