The successful launch of two newly refurbished Midlothian leisure centres along with brand new facilities at a local football ground saw record numbers of visitors and increased membership numbers at the official opening weekend earlier this month.
The redevelopment has been welcomed by the local community who have been getting active and enjoying the improved facilities on offer following work carried out by Lewis & Hickey. Midlothian Council believes the leisure centres represent a significant step in encouraging a more active, healthier lifestyle for local residents.

International architectural practice Lewis & Hickey successfully completed the leisure development projects well ahead of schedule as part of its ongoing Term Contract with Midlothian Council. The £700,000 transformation of the centres now allows them to offer more fitness classes and events for the community, as well as signalling a significant step in the wider redevelopment and modernisation of facilities across Midlothian.
Newtongrange and Gorebridge Leisure Centres were refurbished under a linked contract and ran concurrently on site. Both centres were modernised and now boast state of the art ToneZone fitness suites, complete with the latest comfort cooling systems and carefully selected lighting to suit the facilities and their functions.
Newtongrange Leisure Centre also benefits from the addition of a 100sq m dance and aerobics studio. At Gorebridge, what was once an underused kitchen, meeting and lounge area, has now been radically transformed into a new ToneZone, which are unique to Midlothian leisure centres.
A new changing pavilion with ancillary accommodation including team dug-outs was built to replace inadequate and dilapidated facilities beyond economic repair, for local football teams.
