Waterfront Barry Development Will See New Construction Standards

A £350 million development has been announced for Waterfront Barry that will see new standards for sustainable construction in Wales - with all the 2,000 new homes and the commercial development designed to the highest environmental standards.

The proposals by a consortium comprising Taylor Wimpey, Persimmon Homes and Barratt Homes, include 400 affordable homes and the development of 300,000 sq ft for commercial and leisure uses. These include a hotel, restaurants, café bars, some retail outlets and possibly a cinema.

The sale of 41-hectare (100-acre) prime development site has been agreed by the Welsh Assembly Government and Associated British Ports (ABP) who have worked together since 1991 through the Barry Joint Initiative to transform the site surrounding the port’s Number One Dock into a thriving and stylish waterfront community.

This latest development on Waterfront Barry - one of the UK’s largest and most successful redevelopment projects - is set to become an exemplary model of environmental best practice.

The commercial property will be developed to BREEAM excellent standards and the new homes, which include 400 affordable homes, will meet the eco homes’ excellent standards. This is the highest current environmental standard set by the Building Research Establishment.

The site is the largest and last remaining key site on Waterfront Barry and occupies a prime location overlooking Number One Dock.

ABP, as landowner and its Joint Venture Partner, the Welsh Assembly Government will maintain their involvement during the 'master planning' stage and are proud that this third and final phase in the regeneration of Waterfront Barry will raise the development bar even higher for sustainable construction in Wales.

leuan Wyn Jones, Minister for the Economy and Transport, said the proposals supported the Assembly Government’s green strategy to promote sustainable development and its drive to achieve higher environmental standards on new developments.

He said: "It is excellent news to see some of the UK's leading house builders taking a key role and helping to set the highest environmental standards for this development standards for this development as well as providing a significant number of affordable homes.

“Waterfront Barry plays a vital role on the ongoing regeneration of South Wales and these proposals will provide a significant boost for the area and create new jobs through the commercial and leisure developments."
