Swansea Council Selects RDE Silex

Swansea Council has selected London-based RDE Silex as preferred development partner for the redevelopment of the Mariner Street car park site in the city centre.

The site is an important part of the City Centre regeneration strategy following closely behind the recent announcements of the £1bn Hammerson and Urban Splash City Centre framework scheme and the Thurleigh redevelopment of the former David Evans site.

The City Centre Framework launched in March last year included the redevelopment of Mariner Street as part of the project.

The Mariner Street design has developed into a vibrant mix of uses incorporating student accommodation, hotel and ground floor retail. The emphasis on the design is high quality and will include public open spaces and will produce an urban village concept revitalising the northern high street area.

To facilitate the development, the current station car park will be relocated to the top floor of the High Street multi storey which will be refurbished as part of the agreement.

Swansea Council Leader Chris Holley said: "Mariner Street is an important gateway to the city.

"The idea of creating an urban village feel to the development will help revitalise the High Street area of the city centre and increase the availability of retail shopping units in the area.

"This proposal is a vote of confidence in the economic vitality of our city."
