The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) has awarded its Gold Medal for 2008 to Mike Glover of Arup for his outstanding contribution to the design and construction of major multi-disciplinary projects around the world.
Mike Glover is one of the most versatile and experienced engineers at Arup, where he joined as a graduate in 1969. Having trained as a civil and structural engineer with early emphasis on research and development and analysis, he expanded his skills into the design leadership of multidisciplinary projects ranging from tall buildings, energy projects and large transportation and infrastructure projects around the world. He has an enviable track record of award-winning projects, including the HSBC headquarters in Hong Kong, and is a Fellow of Arup, of IStructE and of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
He has focused the last ten years of his work on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, one of the biggest UK infrastructure projects of the last century. The 109km long high speed rail link includes 150 bridges, many miles of tunnels, the major rejuvenation of London's Grade I listed St Pancras Station and the regeneration of large urban brown-field areas in Kings Cross, Stratford and North Kent. His involvement with this project saw him awarded The Royal Academy of Engineering's Sir Frank Whittle Medal.
Mike will be presented with the prestigious Gold Medal at IStructE's Centenary Annual Dinner, which will take place at the Guildhall, London on Friday, 9th May 2008. He will deliver his Gold Medal Address on Wednesday 25th June 2008 at the Institute of Directors, London.
The Gold Medal is IStructE's highest individual award and is made for exceptional personal contributions to the advancement of structural
engineering. Since 1922, it has only been awarded 40 times. Previous winners of the Gold Medal include Ove Arup (1973), Edmund Happold (1991) and Michel Virlogeux (1996).
Keith Eaton, IStructE Chief Executive, said: "Mike Glover is a worthy winner of the Institution’s Gold Medal. The award recognises Mike's outstanding ability and reputation as a structural engineer, and acknowledges his vital contribution to raising the profile of the profession in the wider construction industry. Mike is simply a great ambassador and role model for structural engineering."
Mike Glover, Director of Arup, commented: "I'm delighted to be awarded the Gold Medal, the greatest professional award I can imagine. I hope that it will further inspire the many talented young engineers I have worked with over the many years to keep pushing the boundaries. My thanks to them for making my career so rewarding."
