International construction and management consultants, Turner & Townsend have announced their continued involvement on the redevelopment of The Bowes Museum, with works due to commence later this month.
The museum has just revealed that a bid to secure over £2 million of funding from One NorthEast through the County Durham Economic Partnership has been successful.
This follows on from the recent successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for £3.3 million, in support of which Turner & Townsend assisted the museum in appointing a design team, producing the HLF Stage 2 bid documents required to secure the funding.
Until recently the building was on English Heritage's list of endangered buildings due to the state of disrepair of the roof, for which Turner & Townsend project managed urgent repair work.
They will now project manage the next phase of the museum's capital programme, which will complete the roof repairs, provide improved collections access and storage, and visitor amenities, includes a new café and retail unit.
The project also includes the provision of a Silver and Metals Gallery, designed by Exhibition Designers Continuum, to improve the interpretation of the Bowes Museum's iconic Silver Swan automaton, and a stunning Textiles and Dress Gallery created by Blue the design Company.
David Gardner, Director of Turner & Townsend, said: "We are delighted to continue work on such a beautiful and historically important building, and we hope to assist the Museum to achieve its goal of becoming a world class visitor attraction in the North of England."
