The 2008 LABC national 'Built in Quality Awards' are shaping up to be the highlight in this year’s building industry calendar.

The high standard of finalists, who were announced this week, demonstrates the difficult and professional work carried out by local authority building control throughout England and Wales.

The 11 categories incorporate every class of building, from domestic extensions, apartments, schools, commercial and retail to industrial properties.

They recognise partnerships between local authorities and designers and architects; achievements in sustainability; structural and fire engineering; disability access compliance; conversions; and community projects. And there is also a Supreme Award, which is chosen from the finalists.

Paul Everall, LABC Chief Executive, said: "LABC is proud to host these awards. It allows the entire building industry and the public to see what happens when building control is carried out successfully by local authorities. Building control is no longer a box ticking, bureaucratic local government service. LABC has revolutionised its service to provide market leading support and value. That value is evident in this year’s list of finalists."

Mr Everall added: "I’d like to congratulate all of the finalists on their outstanding achievements. I look forward to the ceremony, which promises to be an unforgettable event."

Around 500 people are expected to attend the event on 16 October 2008 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

A variety of guests, including senior Government and building control officials, along with contractors, architects and engineers will enjoy the evening with a top presenter. The 2008 Finalists List is available to download from the LABC website at www.labc.uk.com/awards.
