The construction industry in Swansea got a boost with the news that contracts for a new £10 million development have just been signed.
New affordable homes will be built on land made available for development by the Welsh Assembly Government on the SA1 Swansea Waterfront site.
Coastal Housing Group, formerly Swansea Housing Association, has acquired a site overlooking the Prince of Wales Dock from the Assembly Government to develop 66 affordable homes. Construction is due to start on site mid 2009.
The latest deal is seen as a strong sign of confidence in SA1 by Coastal Housing and follows the completion this week of their £12m development of 79 apartments for retired people.
The five and three storey development on a one acre site on SA1 is adjacent to the Village Hotel and includes spacious balconies and an attractive courtyard.
It is Coastal Housing's largest privately funded project to date and is geared towards the 'empty nester' sector people, aged 55 and over.
A new £8 million high specification office development on SA1 has also just been completed and is now on the market.
Langdon House, developed by Broadhall Wharfedale with the support of European funding, has achieved the top BREEAM environmental excellence rating.
The new 41,500 sq ft development designed by Ellis Williams Architects offers fifteen individual units of between 2,475 - 4,845 sq ft which are available to buy or let. The units have the added advantage of being designed around a stunning central glass atrium.
Utilising materials such as slate, glass and stainless steel, the building is based on three floors, interjected with two and four storey areas, to provide a visually impressive backdrop to the working environment.
SA1 is a £400 million development by the Welsh Assembly Government that has acted as a catalyst attracting wider investment in the city and is one of the flagship projects that will be highlighted at the Wales Regeneration Summit today.
