Corporation And LGA Call On Housing Associations To Work Together

Construction News Image
The Housing Corporation and the Local Government Association (LGA) have called on housing associations to continue their close working relationship with local authorities during the current economic downturn in order to help boost affordable housing supply.

A joint letter to associations from Corporation Chief Executive, Steve Douglas and LGA Chief Executive, Paul Coen says the housing delivery targets for 2008-09 remains on track but stresses the importance of continued joint working to ensure that progress continues.

Steve Douglas, Housing Corporation Chief Executive said: "Despite adverse conditions, the Housing Corporation remains on track for meeting its 2008-09 housing delivery targets. Over the year, it plans to deliver 47,650 homes, with 30% of the homes for social rent for larger families. These will help ensure that more new high quality affordable homes will continue to be available in local communities across the country.

"However, this will not be achievable without continued close working relationships at a local level between local authorities, housing associations and the Housing Corporation regional offices. More than ever we will need to work together to adapt to the current environment and be willing to flex current models to ensure continued delivery."

Paul Coen, LGA Chief Executive said: "In their strategic housing role, local authorities will be key to managing the impact of economic turbulence on local housing markets and ensuring that they are well prepared for a future upturn. This will include the effective management of land assets and planning to enable continued development of new affordable homes."
