'Eyesore' Pub To Be Demolished

Last orders have been called on a derelict pub in Leicester after a decision to demolish it.

Leicester City Council is due to begin demolishing the former Golden Age pub, in Ramsay Way, Netherhall, next week.

The disused pub has become a target for antisocial behaviour and vandalism, despite the council boarding it up to prevent people entering.

Now the city council is using emergency powers to demolish the building and clear the site. The decision to intervene and bulldoze the building comes in response to local concerns about the site.

The council is in contact with the building's owners, who are based in Gibraltar, and are carrying out the work with their agreement. The owners have also agreed to meet the costs of the demolition work.

Leicester City Council's Environment Cabinet Member Councillor Rob Wann, said: "This building has become unsafe and an eyesore, and people who break in and vandalise the site are putting themselves in a lot of danger.

"We share the concerns of local residents, and have acted previously to make the site secure. We are now using our emergency powers to demolish the building and make the site safe.

"It is a relatively unusual step but will undoubtedly be for the benefit of everyone living nearby."

Work will involve clearing out the inside of the building before the main demolition work begins.

Planning permission has recently been given for a developer to build a residential care home on the site.
