Handball Arena Gets Planning Approval

Following a public meeting, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Planning Committee has recommended the Handball Arena planning application for approval.

It will now be passed to the Greater London Authority for planning permission to be granted.

Sports users, local people, faith groups, community groups and young people were all consulted on the venue plans as part of the application process.

The 7,000-seat venue will host the preliminary rounds of the Handball competition during the Games as well as the Fencing discipline of the Modern Pentathlon. Goalball will take place in the venue during the Paralympic Games.


After the Games, the Arena will become a new multi-sports facility able to host a wide range of sporting activities. It will be available for community use, athlete training and small to medium-scale events.

ODA Chief Executive David Higgins said: "This takes us a step closer towards a simple, sustainable and flexible Handball Arena that works for Games and legacy. Construction is on track to start this summer on the Arena, which will provide a great experience for competitors and spectators during the Games and offer a new facility for local people to enjoy a range of sports in legacy."
