Lambeth Council Celebrates School Opening

Lambeth council is celebrating the opening of yet another new school building created under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project.

The Elm Court School boasts an impressive range of 21st century facilities that will nurture the special educational needs of students.

The school now occupies a completely refurbished old Edwardian building, formerly known as the Lambeth Institute which was also the previous Strand Grammar School. The school has relocated from premises in Elmcourt Road where it had been since 1959, and is the fourth school to be opened by BSF in Lambeth within two years.

The Elm Court School holds 100 students aged 11-16 who will also benefit from two newly constructed buildings for sport, music, and drama. Designed by JM Architects and built by Apollo Education, its features include: A multi-use games area, atrium at the heart of building to encourage openness and a place for children to relax, glass enclosed stairways, ICT suites, an energy efficient air handling system, art design technology, and community access to facilities including the sport hall.

Headteacher, Bill Hutchinson, said: "This is a great moment for The Elm Court School and one we have been waiting to arrive for some time. We are moving from our old buildings to a new state-of-the-art facility where we can provide real education benefits to our students. The new school is an important historical building steeped in education, which has been adapted specifically to our needs."

Tim Byles, Chief Executive of Partnership for Schools, added: "The Building Schools for the Future programme is about giving all young people better and brighter futures, no matter what their background or abilities. The Elm Court School is the latest BSF school to open in Lambeth, and I look forward to hearing about the positive impact the investment in this state-of-the-art learning environment has on the lives of its students, teachers and the wider community."

The school will open its doors to the local community with an open day for residents in April and hold a grand opening in July.
