Ambitious plans to regenerate Clapham have been given the go-ahead by Lambeth planners.
The council's development partner, Cathedral Group, has been granted permission for the multi-million pound Future Clapham scheme. The development will deliver new, high quality public facilities for Clapham at no cost to the tax-payer. The scheme will also deliver 199 new homes.
Councillor Lib Peck, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing said: "This is fantastic news and a tremendous boost for Clapham. The scheme will provide modern and accessible facilities including a new leisure centre, swimming pool, high street library and healthcare centre, as well as much needed high quality affordable homes, all at zero cost to the tax payer. We have undertaken a great deal of consultation with local people to ensure the new facilities best meet the needs and aspirations of the community and I'd like to thank all those who have taken the time to attend workshops and fill in questionnaires."
The scheme involves the transformation of two sites in the heart of Clapham. The site of a disused office block on Clapham High Street, Mary Seacole House, will be redeveloped as a state-of-the-art public library, healthcare centre and 136 homes. This development is subject to final approval by the Greater London Authority and a decision is expected by the end of April.
The nearby Clapham Leisure Centre will be redeveloped to provide a brand new leisure facility with a six lane, 25 metre pool, a 100 station gym and a four-court sports hall, as well as 63 new homes.
