Sign Up To The Greener Sheffield Challenge

People across Sheffield are being asked to do their bit in making the city better for future generations.

The City Council is calling on residents, businesses and partners in the public sector to contribute towards reducing the city's carbon footprint. It doesn't have to involve difficult changes for everyone, but it does need everyone to join in and take some action.

Proposals setting out how Sheffield will tackle the issues around climate change over the next 20 years are being considered by the City Council's Cabinet tomorrow.

There are three key areas that will be the focus of attention - housing, transport and business, and the Sheffield Carbon Reduction Framework highlights short and long term aims for each sector.

The framework also identifies where the Government needs to take more action if the city is to achieve its 30% carbon reduction target by 2020.

Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, the Council's Cabinet member for Climate Change and Local Environment said: "We recognise that we cannot reduce the amount of carbon used in the city overnight, but by working together with residents and businesses we can make a big difference. We want to invite everyone in the city to commit to this challenge to play their part and in turn, we will make it easier for everyone to reduce their carbon emissions in the home, at work and how they travel."

The report emphasises the importance of tackling climate change and delivering a low carbon economy to support the city's economic ambitions.
