Have Your Say On The Moor's Redevelopment

Sheffield's new indoor market takes a step towards being a reality as residents get their chance to have a first peek at the plans.

The indoor market, to be situated on the Moor, will replace Castle Market with a brand new state of the art facility. Sheffielders will be able to drop in and see the plans and give their views on the new market and designs for improving the public square, in a series of consultation events over the weekend and early next week.

Councillor Paul Scriven, Leader of Sheffield City Council said: "The Moor development provides us with an excellent opportunity to massively improve the retail offering in the city centre as well as upgrading the public space. The market design is inspired by the Winter Garden and together with improved lighting and seating in the outdoor public space, Sheffield people will see a real improvement to the area. The new indoor market will provide local people with fresh food and produce and will be a dramatic improvement on the current facilities. Bringing with it jobs and opportunities for local people and helping to boost our city's economy."

The scheme comprises a new indoor market and improved public realm. The latter is to be funded by Yorkshire Forward, subject to a successful grant bid. The scheme should bring the Moor area to the high level of award winning public spaces that have been seen elsewhere in the city. The proposed indoor market will house just over 200 stalls with around 30,000 sq ft as well as an additional 10,000 sq ft in storage space.

The final decision on the plans will be made by Sheffield City Council's City Centre, South and East Planning Board at a future meeting.
