Leicester City Council Appoints Danaher & Walsh

Leicester based civil engineering firm, Danaher & Walsh, was awarded a further contract by Leicester City Council as part of its "General Civil Engineering and repairs to Highway Structures Framework".

This contract will see Danaher & Walsh complete urgently needed refurbishment and strengthening work to another one of Leicester’s old bridges.

Recent works has seen the Gwendolen Road Bridge in Evington undergo substantial reconstruction of the original badly deteriorated concrete deck.

As explained by Leicester City Council's Principal Engineer, Abul Tarafder: "The Leicester City and Danaher & Walsh team commenced work on the Gwendolen Bridge project in February this year and the 15 week refurbishment has now been completed. The original concrete deck was badly deteriorated and the stability and longevity of the bridge was under question.

"The refurbishment and strengthening work done by Danaher & Walsh will see the bridge survive for years to come. We would like to say thank you to the local residents and road users for their patience and cooperation during the works."

Dan Danaher from Danaher & Walsh said: "We are delighted to be working with Leicester City Council. Danaher & Walsh is a Leicestershire company and to be refurbishing Leicester's old bridges, which is all part of the Local Transport Plan, makes us very proud."

Similar work to strengthen the Stoughton Bridge was also completed in April and the ongoing works on Old Bow Bridge to refurbish the Grade 2 listed road bridge over the Old River Soar, will continue through until September 2009. Both of these projects are part of the Framework Contract.

Danaher & Walsh Works Supervisor, Steve Crawford said: "The Old Bow Bridge project is well underway and going to plan. We are repairing the deck and making it waterproof. We are also paving the area up to the footways and painting the parapets.

"This is a fairly long project, estimated to go through until September, as the road needs to remain open and we cannot get contra-flow traffic diversions put in place until the school summer holidays."

Mr Tarafder added: "The Framework Contract has been running since 2006 and is due to end 2010. Danaher & Walsh are an experienced local contractor and we are very pleased that they are working in partnership with us to achieve our Local Transport Plan objectives, which in turn contributes to the regeneration of Leicester."
