Over 85 people attended a recent information event about the proposed new housing development in Millhouse Green.
Barnsley Council's housing department held the event and people of all ages attended to look at the plans and find out the finer details of the proposed new properties on Royd Avenue. Barnsley councillors and town councillors also attended in support of the scheme.
Cabinet Spokesperson for Development, Cllr Bill Newman said that the council recognises that providing quality affordable rural housing is an issue for Barnsley and this scheme intends to build on a programme of rural developments built in conjunction with Equity Housing Association such as those at Cawthorne and Thurgoland.
It has been established that there is a need for affordable housing in the area. The proposed scheme will be developed by Equity Housing Association and, if approved, provide two and three bedroomed bungalows, and two, three and four bedroomed houses all for rent.
The proposed scheme will also bring benefits to the Millhouse Green football club with the provision of new vehicle access and a car park for the football club as part of the overall building plans.
Steve Jagger, Assistant Director for Strategic Housing said: "The response was overwhelming, with people queuing up for information on the scheme. It shows the need for affordable housing for local people in the west of the borough. There are only 58 council-owned properties left in Millhouse Green, with only three vacancies in the last 12 months, so it is no surprise local people were extremely supportive as this development of 34 properties will be a much needed addition to housing stock."
