L And F Is Progress But It Could Have Been Greater, Says CIOB

Construction News Image
In response to the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) consultation on Part L and F of the Building Regulations, the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has again called for a wider focus towards energy use in buildings.

The CIOB stated in its response that there should be a greater general awareness of the impacts that Building Regulations have on national energy policy. Particularly the CIOB feels fuel use is important for shaping the way towards low and zero carbon buildings in the near future.

Michael Brown, CIOB Deputy Chief Executive commented: "Part L and F certainly makes progress. However if there had been a greater focus on consequential improvements for existing building stock more could have been done. This is a missed opportunity to progress the UK towards the CO2 targets set out in the Climate Change Act.

"Existing buildings represent an area where significant savings in energy usage will have to be made, and in a sector that is the hardest to tackle. We feel that the importance of this issue may have been lost on the Government. This is a good example of why the industry needs the influence of a Chief Construction Adviser."
