The £500,000 scheme, which is part of a package of infrastructure improvements planned for the city's Northern Corridor (the main transport route from Woolwell into the city centre), includes:
- Construction of a new southbound bus and cycle lane between Charlton Road and Crownhill, being delivered through a road widening scheme
- Extension of the city-bound bus lay-by at Crownhill (low level)
- Safety improvements to the Crownhill flyover (Crownhill Road) which will see the introduction of safety barriers around the bridge piers
Councillor Kevin Wigens, Cabinet Member for Transport said: "The works on Tavistock Road are a core part of the 2009/10 Northern Corridor transport improvements launched earlier this year. Investing on this important route now is essential in order to support the growth of the city and avoid increased congestion on our roads.
"Delivering improvement schemes in the same geographical area at the same time is a new approach for the Council and is a much smarter way of working. Joining together the individual projects into a single delivery package means we can minimise disruption to the public. However, there will be delays and we ask that people bear with us whilst these essential works are completed."
