Redevelopment Begins At RNAS Culdrose

Construction News Image
A significant redevelopment is underway at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Culdrose, Cornwall, following a contract award to Kier and Mott MacDonald.

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and the Royal Navy marked the occasion with a contract-signing and ground-breaking ceremony, signalling the start of a transformative project for the base.

The redevelopment project will include the replacement and refurbishment of the 820 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) hangars, associated office buildings, and the complete reconstruction of the Engineering Training School (ETS). The work involves a combination of demolishing outdated structures, constructing new facilities within the existing site footprint, and upgrading current infrastructure.

RNAS Culdrose plays a vital role in the UK's defence strategy. It houses the 820 Naval Air Squadron, which conducts Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Airborne Surveillance and Control (ASaC) missions that are critical to protecting the nation's nuclear deterrent. The base is also home to the Engineering Training School, which delivers specialist air engineering training to support Merlin helicopter operations.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of the redevelopment. The new and refurbished facilities will feature water-saving systems, energy-efficient lighting, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, and air source heat pumps to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. These efforts align with the UK Ministry of Defence’s broader goals for achieving Net Zero carbon emissions across its estate.

The DIO, which oversees infrastructure development for the armed forces, emphasised its focus on delivering high-quality, sustainable solutions.

The redevelopment is set to be completed by the spring of 2028, with the new facilities expected to enhance operational capabilities and provide state-of-the-art environments for personnel. Once finished, the modernised infrastructure will support the Royal Navy’s critical defence missions while improving the training environment for engineers.

The investment reflects the UK's commitment to maintaining a strong and sustainable defence infrastructure, ensuring that RNAS Culdrose remains a key asset for national security.
