Solar Powered Schools First In Lambeth

School children will learn how they can become more energy efficient after an innovative Lambeth Council project created the first solar powered schools in the borough.

Telferscot, Vauxhall, and Streatham Wells Primary Schools have all been fitted with solar panelled roofs which will make them approximately £2,000 better off each year.

The Lambeth Council project was funded by Concerto, EDF Energy Green Fund and national grant programmes. It was delivered in conjunction with the council's Children and Young People's Service, Building Schools for the Future and Community Team, and Carbon Descent. The scheme encouraged children, parents, and teachers to think of how to improve energy performance at school and at home.

The project has seen energy display meters installed in each school which provides information on the carbon saved, water temperature generated, and the number of kilo watt hours produced by the solar thermal panels.

Councillor Pete Robbins, Lambeth Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Service, said: "This truly innovative project makes children think about energy efficiency and climate change from a very early age, and is something we will actively encourage and promote in future years. We have received some wonderful feedback from children, teachers, and parents, which has made this project thoroughly worthwhile."
