New £8m Building Set To Open

An ambitious new £8m community development will open next week on Monday 21 February bringing a wide range of local services and organisations together under one roof.

The Hub has been designed to give local people easy access to the services they need in one place and is the first building of its kind in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire County Council has co-ordinated work to transform a disused football pitch off Market Street in South Normanton into the innovative 3,500 square metre community resource – the result of a seven-year partnership project.

It is hoped the development will encourage further economic regeneration and breathe new life into the town.

It includes on its ground and first floors:
  • Reception
  • GP surgery
  • New library and information centre
  • Safer Neighbourhood Team police office
  • South Normanton Children's Centre
  • Bolsover District Council contact centre
  • Derbyshire Community Health Services
  • Adult community education centre
  • South Normanton Parish Council
  • The Bistro café
  • A training facility for council staff
  • The South Normanton Pre-School
  • Offices and community meeting rooms
  • 'Release' debt counselling service
There will also be 24 apartments on the second floor.

Derbyshire County Council Leader Councillor Andrew Lewer will visit The Hub on Monday for a tour of the building accompanied by county councillors Jim Coyle, member for South Normanton West and South Normanton East member Clive Moesby.

Councillor Lewer said: "The Hub will transform the way services are provided to residents in South Normanton, Blackwell, Pinxton and the surrounding areas providing an attractive community venue with easy access to many services.

"I believe it is an example of partnership working at its best."

During his visit Councillor Lewer will unveil a plaque in honour of former county councillor Lionel Cannon (80) who was instrumental in getting the project started and chaired its project board from 2003 until his retirement in 2005.

Derbyshire County Council has worked in partnership on the project with Bolsover District Council, Derbyshire Community Health Services, South Normanton Parish Council, Derbyshire police and Bolsover Local Strategic Partnership.
