One of the most targeted items of machinery for theft is contractor's plant, and that might just include the Porta-loos!
If you are hiring in plant, you need to make sure that you are fully aware of the conditions that you are hiring under, there are various but the main ones you will come across are Contactors Plant Association (CPA) or Hire Association Europe.
Unless you have purchased additional insurance at the point of hire (with the hire company) the chances are that you have hired the item of plant or equipment with NO insurance cover. This means that if anything happens to it, such as theft then you are on for the cost of replacement.
The cost of replacement varies depending the conditions of hire the hire co' are working on, Contractors Plant Association for instance says you will "indemnify", that generally means that if the item is a few years old then you would base the cost on a new item less the wear and tear. However, others may not be so forgiving and require you to replace on a "as new" basis.
Large Items of Plant
The chances are if you hire in large items of plant that it will come with a driver, cranes for instance is a typical one and you need to understand exactly how this is being hire, is it CPA or Contract lift, simple terms, hire under CPA and you are responsible for loss damage etc, under Contract Lift then the hirers of the item will become responsible - The point is - Make sure you fully understand your liabilities and responsibilities when hiring.
