Glendyne Develops A Great Finish In Islington

Cembrit's Glendyne natural slates have been installed on a loft conversion project in Islington, London to create a stunning finish to a modern three storey property.

The project highlights Glendyne's versatility and attractiveness by coping well with the many roof details and harmonising well with the surrounding location.

The design made use of extensive lead work undertaken by a master craftsman continuing the theme of traditional materials and techniques including the use of natural slates on the roof. Built by 4C Developments of Putney, Irving Mews is a development of twenty seven properties built to a high specification. The roof demanded a slate that would be easy to work with and be of sufficient quality to contribute to the appearance of the building while performing to the highest standard. 4C chose Glendyne in conjunction with their client following an evaluation of the available products on the market. A total of 2,300 Glendyne slates have been used on the project, which would traditionally have employed blue/grey Welsh Slate. Lack of availability has made Glendyne the alternative choice for inner London boroughs.

"Our previous experiences with Glendyne had all been positive so we were keen to use it on this demanding roof project," explained Steve Carlin of 4C Developments. "The property is in a built up area and Glendyne sits well within the surrounding environment. Due to Glendyne’s workability we were also able to incorporate the dormers and roof lights without compromise on the quality of finish or performance."

Sourced from the town of Saint Marc du Lac Long, Quebec in Canada, Glendyne benefits from a smooth texture and the combination of modern extraction technology and traditional finishing skills ensure a consistently high standard product. Used in a number of countries the slate is one of the most widely tested roof slates achieving the highest ratings under all of the test regimes. The slate has a fine consistent grain, and is able to withstand all weather conditions making it ideal for specifiers and roofers in the UK new build and restoration market.

Available exclusively from Cembrit in the UK, Glendyne offers great value for money and if laid correctly, will last the lifetime of a building. Using skills built up over 80 years, Cembrit select natural slate from Spain, Canada, Brazil, China, India and the countries of Western Europe. From UK quarries Cembrit offer Welsh, Cornish and Westmorland slates. Quality levels at Group factories are rigorously maintained to high standards with fibre cement slates produced to BS EN 492:2004 and manufactured under the control of a BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 quality management system.
