Demolition Marks New Era For Academy

Kier Construction and Nene Park Academy marked the start of the structural demolition of the Academy's old buildings, by inviting students to help get the process under way.

Students took time out from their Easter break to join principal Mark Woods, Kier technical director Mark Jude and Chris Jackson from demolition contractors CAJ Services for the demolition.

Funded by Peterborough City Council, Nene Park Academy is to be redeveloped as part of the Secondary School Review programme, which looks to refurbish and/or rebuild all Peterborough secondary schools.

The £14.25m project includes the re-modelling of a quarried area into a grassed amphitheatre feature at the front of the new academy. The existing sports hall will remain and other areas of the school including the dining area, changing facilities and two teaching blocks will be remodelled and refurbished.

Nene Park Academy principal, Mark Woods, commented: "This is an exciting milestone in the process of transforming our current Academy site into a modern school with a dynamic learning environment. I am delighted that Kier has invited us to take part - even though this is the first day of their holidays I know the students are very excited to be involved.

"The new, state-of-the-art facilities will reflect the Academy’s philosophy - which is based on a strong house system - and reinforce our focus on science, enterprise and the arts."
