Surrey Council Saves Residents On Energy Bills

Almost £550,000 is set to be clawed back by Surrey households on the annual cost of energy thanks to the county council's help.

More than 11,000 people joined the authority's switch and save scheme to tackle rising fuel bills.

They linked up with more than 150,000 people nationwide to use their collective clout to negotiate prices as part of the UK's largest energy switching scheme of its kind.

An auction was held, where suppliers put in their best bids, and the total saving being offered through Surrey's scheme is £545,000.

The combined gas and electricity tariff – used by thousands who joined Surrey’s scheme – was won by Sainsbury's Energy. People who switch to its online ‘dual fuel’ deal and pay by direct debit will get £118 back on average at the end of a one-year contract.

Scottish Power was the 'electricity only' winner, with an average annual saving of £70 on its online deal and £58 through paper billing. People on pre-payment meters can save up to £48.

Some participants will not benefit because the deals they are on are among the best available but the majority will get discounts.

Laura Langstaff, Surrey County Council’s head of procurement and commissioning, said: "It's great news that the county council’s scheme means people in Surrey can cut almost £550,000 from the cost of heating and lighting their homes.

"For thousands this will amount to nearly £120 in a year on average and many more will also be able to significantly reduce their energy bills."
