Oxford Council Shortlisted For Energy Award

Oxford City Council has been shortlisted in the UK Community Energy Awards.

The council is one of three organisations shortlisted in the Local Authority Partnership category which recognises local authorities that go the extra mile to help local community energy organisations.

In recent years, the council has supported community-led energy projects by establishing the Low Carbon Hub as a resource for communities, by accessing grant funding from central government and the European Union and by providing a loan facility to enable the Low Carbon Hub to implement community-owned renewable energy projects. The City Council has also invested in renewable energy projects on its own estate, housing and leisure centres.

Councillor John Tanner, Board Member for Cleaner, Greener Oxford said: "I am thrilled that Oxford City Council has been recognised as a pioneering council helping to scale up community energy projects in the city region.

"By helping to set up the Low Carbon Hub and accessing major funding streams to implement large scale renewable energy projects, the City Council is really playing a major role in making community energy a reality in the UK."

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Oxford Town Hall on Thursday 4 September 2014.
