The Mayor of London has marked a major milestone in the delivery of thousands of new homes for Londoners on one of the capital's largest regeneration projects, Greenwich Peninsula.
By the end of this year more than 1300 new homes, including 457 for low cost rent and 229 shared ownership for first time buyers, will be under construction on land owned by the Mayor at Greenwich Peninsula. The 80 hectare disused gasworks, taken on by the Greater London Authority in 2012, and previously a stalled scheme, has the potential to deliver more than 10,000 homes.
Today, the Mayor, Boris Johnson, helped work on a new shared ownership home, overlooking the River Thames, due to be completed next year by development partner Knight Dragon. The new neighbourhood is within minutes from The O2 Arena, with excellent transport connections including the Jubilee line and North Greenwich Pier as well as the Emirates Airline linking Greenwich Peninsula to London's Royal Docks, another of the Mayor’s key Opportunity Areas.
Mr Johnson said: “As London's population continues to grow we are doing everything possible to unlock development and double house building. These new homes on Greenwich Peninsula are testament to the enormous construction now transforming the capital and creating the homes Londoners so desperately need. Large scale schemes like this would not be possible without world class supporting infrastructure, and the proposed Silvertown Tunnel will be essential not just for east London, but for the capital as a whole and its continued success as the motor of the UK economy."
