£6.5bn Project Reveals Abandoned Station

Construction News Image
Engineers working on the Bermondsey Dive Under, part of the £6.5 billion Thameslink Programme, have uncovered the remains of an abandoned railway station which closed over 100 years ago.

The forgotten Southwark Park Station was open from 1902 until closing in 1915.

The programme will provide new tracks and signal systems, improved connections between destinations and will redevelop London Bridge station to expand its space and facilities.

The team from Network Rail and Skanska are also rebuilding 20 bridges between New Cross and Waterloo East to increase their strength.

Project Manager Greg Thornett said: "The Bermondsey Dive Under is a key part of the Thameslink Programme, creating the railway necessary to provide a frequent and reliable service through London Bridge and make a huge difference to passengers' journeys, cutting journey times and making the services more reliable."

Speaking about the abandoned station, Mr Thornett added: "We uncovered the footings for the former platforms while we were preparing the top of the viaduct for new track and we are now working up in the roof space of the former ticket hall to fill in the old sky lights, ready to carry the final track alignment."

The programme is expected to be completed in 2018.
