Work is underway to deliver project offices for the £4.2 billion Thames Tideway Tunnel (TTT) scheme in London.
A joint venture between Port of Tilbury and S Walsh, London Construction Link (LCL), has begun to carry out water-bourne deliveries of the offices as part of the enabling works to set up the Chamber Wharf drive site.
A total of 99 office segments were loaded aboard S Walsh's specialist pontoons, which will be transported 22 nautical miles up the Thames to the project site. Over 13 barge journeys will be completed, with each carrying up to 12 offices across two pontoons.
Peter Ward, Senior Asset Manager from the Port of Tilbury said: “We are excited to be part of this major construction project in London. With the delivery of the offices for the Tideway East project team, we have demonstrated how effective water-bourne transportation is to deliver into Central London. By using the River Thames, we are not only reducing the road mile impact for the project but we are also helping to reduce congestion on the roads."
Westley Pickup, Commercial Director from S Walsh added: "Tideway Tunnel is a real testament to what can be achieved by using the River Thames to reduce lorry movements within Central London whilst reducing the risk to vulnerable road users. S.Walsh has invested over £3,000,000 in the last 12 months on new marine transportation equipment in order to support works on the River Thames and the LCL Alliance."
The TTT project will see a 16-mile new sewage tunnel created to help capture millions of tonnes of sewage which overflows into the River Thames.
The project is expected to be completed in 2023.
