Welsh First Minister Seeks Assurances For Major Metro Scheme

Wales' First Minister (FM), Carwyn Jones, has travelled to Brussels seeking assurances over a multi-million pound transport scheme in the wake of Brexit.

The Welsh Government has committed £369 million to the Metro project over the next four years,

The South Wales Metro scheme plans to deliver better trains, buses, light rail or tram services in Cardiff and the south Wales valleys.

However, Minister Jones is seeking a further £110m from the European Commission to help deliver the new, fully integrated transport network.

He is also meeting with EU ministers to gain reassurances that the development will not be affected by future Brexit negotiations.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "The EU referendum result has undoubtedly raised concerns about the delivery of our major capital programmes which currently receive funding from Europe.

"I am in Brussels today to personally seek assurance from the European Commission that we can rely on their continued support for the Metro project in the months and years ahead. It is vital we keep up the momentum so we can secure approval before the UK leaves the EU.

"The Metro is far more than just a transport scheme - it is a catalyst for transforming the economic and social prospects of our country. This ambitious development links people and jobs across South Wales, with faster journey times and more frequent services.

"A huge amount of hard work has already taken place to make this a reality. Today is an opportunity to showcase our vision to the Commission and secure their ongoing support."
