Wates has won a £21.3 million contract to build a new BAE Systems' training facility in Barrow.
The new Central Training Facility will provide training facilities for apprentices on the company's Successor Programme and is intended to boost the business' existing submarine trade labour pool.
Features include a new teaching block complete with reception, classrooms and offices. The development will also include a central 'street' with welfare facilities, craft workshops, changing rooms and a restaurant.
Phil Harrison, Managing Director of Wates Construction Midlands & North, said: "The strength of a project lies in the reciprocal values of its partners and Wates shares with BAE Systems a long-standing commitment to invest in the future workforce, which will enable us to create a truly world class centre for training.
"Having started my working life as a shipbuilding apprentice in Barrow, I take great pride in being a part of such an important development and I can personally attest to the difference that this significant investment will make to the careers of local people."
Tony Johns, MD of BAE Systems Submarines, added: "The new facility will provide a modern learning environment to supplement the training our apprentices already receive."
The contract award is the latest in a line of projects being delivered for BAE Systems Submarines, including the recent completion of the new Resolution Building at the Barrow shipyard.
