Carmarthenshire County Council and Bouygues UK recently celebrated the unveiling of new hoardings at the Pentre Awel development.
Designed by students at Carmarthen School of Art at Coleg Sir Gâr, the hoardings highlight the project's commitment to community benefits and its alignment with the seven wellbeing goals of Wales' Well-being of Future Generations Act.
The Pentre Awel development is a prestigious, multi-million-pound project that aims to create a thriving community. As part of its focus on local involvement, college students were tasked with designing hoardings that showcase how the development is contributing to a prosperous, healthier, globally responsible, resilient, cohesive, equal, and vibrant Wales.
The winning designs are now on display on the hoarding panels surrounding the construction site. Each panel represents one of the wellbeing goals, reflecting the Pentre Awel development's ethos and purpose. The project served as a valuable educational experience for the students, allowing them to apply their creative skills to a real-world project with a significant community impact.
Nina Williams, Bouygues UK's social value advisor for Pentre Awel, said: "The Pentre Awel development is a key regeneration project for Carmarthenshire County Council which will have a huge positive impact on the region and the people living within the community for years to come.
"In recognition of this positive impact, we at Bouygues UK worked alongside Coleg Sir Gâr to devise a design project for the college students. We wanted the hoarding around the site entrance to be designed to express the positive effects that Pentre Awel will have on the local community. The students have done an amazing job, all producing outstanding work that portray the core values of Pentre Awel in an eye catching and thought-provoking way."
Dr Ashley Wallington, Director of Curriculum at Coleg Sir Gâr said: "The development of the hoarding panels for the Pentre Awel site provided our Art and Design learners at Coleg Sir Gâr with a valuable 'live brief', offering them the chance to collaborate with a major employer on a real-world project. Working with their client, they honed key employability skills and attributes essential for their future careers. We are so thankful for the opportunity that has been given to them."
Carmarthenshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans added: "Having the opportunity to meet the young people of Coleg Sir Gâr who have created these excellent pieces of artwork has been time well spent. The students through their artwork show their vision for what Pentre Awel means to them and I am glad that these are on display for the public to see. As said on the boards, we are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to Pentre Awel, a development that can be accessed by all. Thank you to the students and their tutors for all their hard work on this project."
Pentre Awel is a truly collaborative scheme being delivered for the local community by Carmarthenshire County Council in partnership with Hywel Dda University Health Board, Universities and colleges and is part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal (£40million). It aims to create around 1,800 jobs over 15 years and boost the local economy by more than £450m.
The development will include a new state-of-the-art leisure centre and hydrotherapy pool together with education, research and business development space; a clinical research and delivery centre; and a well-being skills centre. Externally, Pentre Awel will enjoy landscaped outdoor public spaces for recreation, walking and cycling.
This design project formed part of Bouygues UK's commitment to provide significant social value and engagement to surrounding schools, colleges and universities. It also has a school ambassador and community ambassador scheme.
