Miller Construction has been awarded an £82 million contract by Hammerson to create a major retail and leisure development at Union Square, in the heart of Aberdeen City Centre.
The works will transform the central area of the city as construction gets underway on the nine hectare site.
Hammerson appointed Miller Construction as the main contractor for the development to be located adjacent to the city’s railway station and harbour area.
The project will create the largest scheme of its type in Scotland, and will include a civic square; 21,000sqm of flexible shopping centre retail space; 16,300sqm of retail park accommodation and 7,800sqm of leisure and catering; a 4,200sqm multiplex cinema and 1,500 parking spaces. There are also plans for covered links between Aberdeen’s railway station, bus interchange and port. The project will also include over £6 million of improvements to the railway station infrastructure and facilities.
Brian McQuade, Joint Managing Director of Miller Construction, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this prestigious contract and to be working with Hammerson, First ScotRail, Network Rail and Aberdeen City Council. Our retail experience is second to none and we look forward to delivering exceptional facilities in Aberdeen.
“We have spent a lot of time to-date planning ahead to ensure that disruption to the station users will be kept to a minimum. We started advance works in December to prepare a temporary car park to ensure a swift start to the operations in January.”
Work is now underway at Union Square, with completion of the train station redevelopment works expected early 2008, with the overall completion date for the entire scheme expected by Autumn 2009.
