Aggregate Secures Olympic Cement Contract

Aggregate Industries has won the contract to exclusively supply the ready-mix concrete required for the construction of the Olympic Park in London.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) awarded the contract to the firm after considering proposals from Cemex, Hanson, Lafarge, Tarmac and Robert Brett & Sons.

The Leicestershire-based company was selected having convinced the ODA of its green credentials, which includes the setting up of a concrete plant on site to supply contractors. It will have responsibility for site-wide delivery, off-loading and distribution of concrete in order to reduce the number of lorries delivering to the site.

Aggregate Industries will soon begin negotiating with contractors, a process that the ODA will monitor to ensure there is cost verification and site-wide negotiated rates.

ODA chief executive David Higgins said the organisation had been impressed with how the industry had responded to the sustainability requirements of the job.

“This is a key contract for the London 2012 project and will help ensure consistency of supply and stability in price for contractors working on the Olympic Park site," added Mr Higgins.

“The construction of the Park and venues will need a huge amount of concrete, both in terms of volume and weight, so this will also be key to meeting our sustainability aspirations.”
