Restoration Of Shepherd Wheel On The Agenda

The restoration of one of Sheffield's most important historic buildings is to be considered by the City Council's Cabinet next Wednesday 10 December.

The Shepherd Wheel Conservation Project would restore the declining 16th century grinding mill and dam protecting the Scheduled Ancient Monument and making it accessible for public use. The project cost is nearly £1 million. Half a million pounds in Heritage Lottery Fund money has been offered if the match funding can be secured.

The Friends of Porter Valley have campaigned for the conservation of Shepherd Wheel for many years and are actively involved in fundraising for the project, having already received a number of contributions, including one from Sheffield Town Trust.

The four year project would repair the dam and embankment and line the dam’s base to prevent further leaks. The building, water wheel and machinery would be restored and an education and training space created for schools, volunteers and organised groups.

The result will be the conservation and protection of a unique remnant of Sheffield's industrial heritage. The innovative re-use and interpretation of the site would result in a new visitor destination that would complement the other historic industrial sites in the city.

Once the project has been agreed by Cabinet, work to appoint consultants and developing the design details can begin. Consultants would be appointed in the New Year and the bids for additional funding progressed.
